Chaplaincy

The School Chaplain at Golden Beach State School plays an important role in our school.  The Chaplaincy program provides another positive mentor and role model for our young people to connect within the school setting.  The Chaplain supports students by providing a listening ear and caring presence for our students and assists them to develop supportive relationships with others. Our Chaplain interacts with all students on a daily basis, however for ongoing individual support, parent consent is required.

Our Golden Beach Chaplain is Colan Coleman (Chappy Col). He has been a chaplain for 7 years, working fulltime across two schools. Chappy Col has a wealth of life experience and has worked with children in different settings.  He has several university qualifications to support his role and draws on his experience in life coaching, working with boys, rites of passage and mental health.  This experience enables him to provide personalised care at the right time for individuals and families in our school community.

Roles and Activities

The School Chaplain’s role and activities are determined by the Local Chaplaincy Committee.  This group’s work is approved through the P&C and is managed by the Principal. The Chaplain’s role is varied and has the ability to provide support for staff members, parents and families. At our school, the Chaplain is integral in providing support through a wide range of activities. These include:

  • Mentoring and helping out in the learning environment through classroom activities and structured programs, e.g. breakfast club, fishing, computer club, The Bounce Back and Drumbeat resilience-building programs and surf skills, which enable further social, emotional and spiritual growth

  • Pastoral care or "chappy chats" for students, staff and parents to create a positive and safe school environment

  • Supporting students in times of need including difficult peer and family relationships, bereavement and other life challenges

  • Involvement in sport, student leadership events, excursions, school camps and lunchtime activities

  • Maintaining the “food bank” - providing fresh fruit and non-perishable items to students and other practical support for families at critical times

  • Co-ordination of special events e.g. Chappy Week Activities, Ks4Kids Walkathon, Fishing Competition, Breakfast Club and Prep Parent Morning Tea
